Solns. of polyvinylacetate (PVAc) in styrene are made by introducing the polymer directly from the reactor into styrene. USE/ADVANTAGE - Solns. of PVAc in styrene are used as low-shrinkage additives to unsaturated polyester moulding materials of the SMC and BMC type. Use of PVAc direct from the polymerisation reactor after distn. of the solvent avoids the intermediate stages of extruding, granulating, water cooling, drying and transporting the PVAc granulate to another site to be dissolved in the styrene, thus giving cost savings and also higher yields from the vinyl acetate monomer.
