PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound in a high yield by reacting a mixture comprising a specific monohalogeno compound and a specified dihalogeno compound with a specific compound having a nitro group. SOLUTION: A mixture comprising a monohalogeno compound of formula I (R<1> is a group capable of forming an anion, etc.; X is a direct binding bond or a >=2C a spacer; Y is a halogen) and a dihalogeno compound of formula II is reacted with a compound of formula III [ring A is (substituted) benzene ring; R<2> is a group capable of forming an anion, etc.; R<3> is an acyl] (e.g. 2-tert- butoxycarbonylamino-3-nitrobenzoate) or its salt preferably in acetonitrile to obtain a compound of formula III e.g. methyl 2-(N-t-butoxycarbonyl-N-[(2'- cyanobiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]amino]-3-nitrobenzoate}.
