PURPOSE: A switching type power supply unit is provided to reduce electric power consumption by supplying starting current only during initial start of the power supply unit. CONSTITUTION: The switching type power supply unit comprises an input rectifier(10) for generating direct current input power; a transformer(12) having primary and secondary wires(T1 and T2) and an auxiliary wire(Vb), the primary wire(T1) being coupled to an input terminal of the input rectifier(10); a switching element controlled by switching current path of the primary wire(T1); a current controller(14) for oscillating pulse signal controlling a switching operation of the switching element; an output rectifier(18) for generating direct current output power; an auxiliary power(16) for generating starting power of the current controller(14); and a starting current supplier(20) coupled to output terminals of the input rectifier(10) and the auxiliary power(16) and a power terminal of the current controller(14), the starting current supplier(20) supplying starting current to the current controller only during initial starting of the unit.
