PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of obtaining more stable and more excellent transfer performance with simple constitution. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus 100, a transfer member 5 includes an elastic member 51 coming into surface-contact with a belt 7, and a sheet member 52 held between the belt 7 and the elastic member 51 and coming into surface-contact with the belt 7, and a contact area 53 between the transfer member 5 and the belt 7 includes a first area 53A where the belt 7 comes into contact with the sheet member 52 provided to cover over the elastic member 51, and a second area 53B where the belt 7 comes into contact with the elastic member 51 on a more downstream side in the moving direction of the belt 7 than the first area over a prescribed range to the downstream side from the end on the upstream side in the moving direction of the belt 7.
