LIGHT CONTROLLING ELEMENT AND ITS MANUFACTURING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light controlling element having a photonic crystal optical waveguide and an optical nonlinear medium which are suitable for high speed repetitive operation. SOLUTION: In the light controlling element provided with the photonic crystal optical waveguide and the optical nonlinear medium provided in a range wherein an electromagnetic field of an electromagnetic wave propagated in the photonic crystal optical waveguide is spread, a photonic band of a photonic crystal part of the photonic crystal optical waveguide is set so that a high photon state density region wavelength in a propagation mode peculiar to the photonic crystal optical waveguide resonates with energy between electronic levels in the optical nonlinear medium.
