PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a phosphor having a small particle diameter and high luminance by forming one having a mean particle diameter in a specified range and an average ionicity, defined from electronegativity, above a specified percentage. SOLUTION: This phosphor has a mean particle diameter of 0.1-1μm and an average ionicity, defined from electronegativity, of at least 80%. To be concrete, it comprises a fluoride phosphor having a chemical composition represented by any one of LnF3 :R<1> , MF2 :R<2> , AMF3 :R<2> and ALnF4 :R<1> (wherein Ln is La, Gd, Y or Lu; M is Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba; A is Li, Na, K or Rb; R<1> is Ce, Pr, Gd, Tb, Dy or Eu; and R<2> is Eu or Mn). A phosphor having a mean particle diameter of 0.1-1μm and a chemical composition represented by LnOX: R<3> (wherein R<3> is Ce, Pr, Gd, Tb, Dy or Eu; and X is F, Cl or Br) can also be used for the same purpose.
