PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter of an internal combustion engine capable of suppressing troubles such as the generation of hammering sound which may be produced by the variation of a rotatingly transmitting state. SOLUTION: This starter comprises a starter gear 4 installed on the rotating shaft 3 of a starter motor 2, a crank gear 6 installed on the crankshaft of the internal combustion engine, and a rotation transmission mechanism 5 transmitting the rotation of the starter gear to the crank gear 6. The rotation transmission mechanism 5 comprises an intermediate gear 50 rotatably by an inertia force between the backlashes B1 and B2 of the starter gear 4 and the crank gear 6 and formed as a helical gear movable in a thrust direction and side walls 51a restricting the thrust movement of the intermediate gear 50. Also a metal spring 57 is installed to relieve the impact of the intermediate gear 50 on the side walls 51a only in the direction of the thrust force produced on the intermediate gear 50 by the rotation of the intermediate gear 50.
