GEAR TRANSMISSION AND DERAILLEUR SYSTEM

A transmission system for vehicles, including bicycles, is disclosed. The system aligns a chain or other drive means to a center of each of a plurality of provided sprockets, allows for a smaller, lighter and more durable shifter/controller, and reduces various complications associated with cable slack and shifting. A derailleur is provided with linear actuated features to directly translate drive means from one position to another along a desired path.

1. A derailleur controller for use in connection with a bicycle transmission system, the controller comprising:
a cable that couples the controller to a derailleur; a first rotatable member having the cable at least partially looped around a perimeter thereof, wherein a resting position of the first rotatable member is controlled by indexing at the derailleur; and at least one user-engageable lever mechanically coupled to the first rotatable member such that actuation of the at least one lever imposes a rotation on the first rotatable member, which, in turn, imposes motion on the cable to shift the derailleur, wherein the at least one lever does not impart forces on the first rotatable member in the absence of a user engaging the at least one lever.
