A communication system comprises a media source for supplying a media signal and a code source for supplying one or more control codes for controlling one or more remote devices located at a remote site. Insertion means combines the media signal with the control code(s) to produce a composite signal which is transmitted to a remote site where a receiver has means 120 for extracting the control code(s) and the media signal, for supplying the media signal to a media output device 150, and for transmitting the control code(s) to the remote device(s) 160.
