PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a contact material for a vacuum valve excellent in large current breaking characteristics and low surge characteristics. SOLUTION: When producing a contact material for a vacuum valve containing Cu of 55 to 75 wt.%, carbide including at least either TiC or VC of 25 to 45 wt.% and Cr of <=5 wt.%, a skeltonlike, formed body 5 essentially consisting of TiC is laminated on a blocky Cu-infiltrated body 3 via Cr powder to be set to the inside of a furnace, next, the temperature is raised to the one equal to or above the melting point of Cu, and the Cr powder is melted into the melted Cu and is further infiltrated into the TiC skelton.
