Isopropyl or butyl alcohols are produced by reacting propylene, butene 1 or 2 or isobutylene with steam in the presence of catalysts comprising phosphoric acid and manganese, copper, iron, cobalt, or uranium, with or without boron, the amount of acid being more than enough to form orthophosphates but not enough to destroy the solid nature of the catalyst. The catalysts may be used alone in solid form, or may be supported on carriers such as p electrode carbon. The temperature may be 100-300 DEG C. and pressure may be employed up to 100 atmospheres. Examples describe the use of a catalyst containing 2.6 molecules of phosphoric acid, one of manganese oxide, and half of boric anhydride.
