PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter capable of preventing adhesion between a shaft spline 5a and a hole spline 6a by suppressing the inclination of a pinion gear 6 with respect to an output shaft 5 when a large shock is generated between the pinion gear 6 and a ring gear. SOLUTION: The shaft spline 5a is disposed at the outer circumference of the output shaft 5, and a hole spline 6a is disposed at the inner circumference of the pinion gear 6. In the shaft spline 5a and the hole spline 6a, a relation of X < Y is satisfied when a clearance between a tooth bottom diameter of the shaft spline 5a and a tooth tip diameter of the hole spline 6a is X, and backlash (play) generated between the tooth surface of the shaft spline 5a and the tooth surface of the hole spline 6a is Y. Therefore, when the large shock is generated between the pinion gear 6 and the ring gear, since the inclination of the pinion gear 6 with respect to the output shaft 5 is suppressed, contact areas of tooth surfaces of the shaft spline 5a and the hole spline 6a are expanded, and the adhesion of the splines caused by a local surface pressure increase is prevented.
