PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of reducing a disposal area formed between images sequentially printed on a recording medium and to provide a mark detection device which reliably carry out positioning when a plurality of inks are overlapped and transferred onto the recording medium. SOLUTION: A first recording unit 11 prints marks M1/M2/M3 having components of particular colors and the image of a first color on the recording medium 2, a recording unit 12 of each color disposed in the downstream side of the first recording unit, and the mark detection devices 31 and 32 disposed for the recording units 11 and 12 of the first and each of the colors, respectively, are provided. A control unit 50 prints the first and second marks M1 and M2 before printing a first-color image 11p of a color recording image of a first sheet in the first recording unit 11, then prints an image 11P while controlling the printing position based on the mark of two images before, and subsequently prints a corresponding mark.
