A method for preparing micro-particles is disclosed, which comprises contacting within the body of a reaction chamber a first cross-linkable reagent (preferably an alginate) in aerosol form with a second cross-linking reagent (preferably a divalent or trivalent cation, such as calcium chloride (CaCl2) in aerosol form to thereby form microparticles, wherein formation of the micro-particles takes place by a sol-gel phase transition associated with the cross-linkable reagent. The disclosure also relates to a reactor adapted for implementing said method, wherein the reactor comprising a reaction chamber body comprising a first atomiser for introducing an aerosol of a cross-linkable reagent into the body of the reaction chamber, and a second atomiser for introducing an aerosol of a cross-linking reagent into the body of the reaction chamber. Suitable atomisers include nozzles that rely on centrifugal, kinetic, pressure or sonic energy. Preferred atomisers include pneumatic and ultrasonic atomisers. |
