The present invention addresses the problem of providing a base material with which adhesion of organisms and biomolecules through the agency of a medium that contains water can be sufficiently suppressed. Provided as a solution to the problem is a base material containing (A) a support and (B) a surface layer, wherein on at least a portion of the surface of the support (A), the surface layer (B) is provided thereupon either directly or with one or more other layers therebetween, and the contact angle in 20°C water of the surface of the surface layer (B) is 80° or greater.
