PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound useful as an intermediate for an agrochemical and a medicine by a method industrially advantageous with respect to safety, toxicity and stability by reacting am acetoacetic ester compound with bromine in a specific solvent. SOLUTION: An acetoacetic ester of formula I (R is a 1-5C alkyl) (e.g. methyl acetoacetate, etc.), is dissolved in a 1-chlorobutane solvent and bromine is dripped to the solution. The solution of the reaction mixture is cleaned preferably with water or an aqueous solution of an inorganic compound (e.g. ammonium chloride, etc.), and the obtained organic layer is concentrated to give a 4-bromoacetoacetic ester compound of formula II (e.g. methyl 4-bromoacetate, etc.). The amount of 1-chlorobutane used is preferably 0.5-20 times as much as the compound of formula, the amount of the bromine is preferably 0.5-1.5 mols. The reaction temperature is preferably -15 to 50<=.
