PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which achieves forward 7 gear shifts by using three sets of simple planetary gears and five friction elements, wherein members passing through an outer diameter side of a planetary gear is minimized in number. SOLUTION: In an automatic transmission, a second ring gear R2 is normally locked. A first rotary member M1 is formed by connecting a first carrier PC1 and third carrier PC3. A second rotary member M2 is formed by connecting a second sun gear S2 and third sun gear S3. An input shaft IN is connected to a first sun gear S1. An output shaft OUT is connected to the first carrier PC1. The automatic transmission is constituted of five friction elements A-E provided between respective transmission elements. At least forward 7 gear shifts and reverse 1 gear shift are achieved through combinations of simultaneously fastening out of the friction elements A-E. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
