PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which achieves forward 7 and 8 gear shifts by using three sets of simple planetary gears (PG1, PG2, PG3) and five friction elements (A, B, C, D, E), wherein a difference between output torques is minimized with respect to the stepping of an accelerator pedal in forward 1 gear shift and retreat 1 gear shift, particularly. SOLUTION: An input shaft IN is normally connected to a first sun gear S1. An output shaft OUT is normally connected to a first carrier PC1. A second sun gear S2 is normally locked. A first rotary member M1 is formed by connecting a first ring gear R1 and third ring gear R3. A second rotary member M2 is formed by connecting a second ring gear R2 and third sun gear S3. At least forward 7 gear shifts and reverse 1 gear shift are achieved through combinations of simultaneously fastened two of the first to fifth friction elements A-E provided between transmission elements.
