摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a voltage nonlinear resistor element which achieves satisfactory adhesion between a functional film and a ceramic substrate with a simple structure, and is easy to manufacture and is inexpensive; and a method of manufacturing the voltage nonlinear resistor element.SOLUTION: A voltage nonlinear resistor element has a functional film 12 on an insulating substrate 14. The functional film 12 is composed mainly of zinc oxide and comprised of an additive containing rare earth oxide, such as praseodymium oxide. A praseodymium oxide compound layer 22 of rare earth oxide is included in the functional film 12 in a boundary 14a between the surface of the insulating substrate 14 and the functional film 12. The functional film 12 contains, in the rare earth oxide, an additive X comprised of at least one kind selected from cobalt oxide, manganese oxide, nickel oxide and chrome oxide by the following mol% and in a range of mass ratio: 80.0 mol%≤a≤99.0 mol%, 1.0 mol%≤b≤20.0 mol%, 0.01≤P/X≤3.5, where a is zinc oxide, b is a mixture of rare earth oxide and the additive X, P is rare earth oxide, and X is the additive X. The functional film 12 contains no glass component.
