<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization conversion element which has high heat resistance, high light resistance and high durability and can be made larger, and a lighting device and a projection type video display device incorporating the element. <P>SOLUTION: A polarization conversion element 15 is provided with a translucent member 31 which transmits light, a polarization separation film 32 which, of all the light incident on the translucent member 31, transmits only P-polarized light and reflects S-polarized light, and a reflection film 33 which reflects the S-polarized light reflected by the polarization separation film 32. The polarization separation film 32 and the reflection film 33 are located within the translucent member 31. The translucent part 31 has a light emission surface 31b from which the P-polarized light that has transmitted the polarization separation film 32 and the S-polarized light that is reflected by the reflection film 33 are emitted, and multiple retardation plates 34 with lateral space between them in the part of the light emission surface 31b from where the P-polarized light is emitted. The retardation plates 34 are made of crystal, which is inorganic matter, and a plurality of the retardation plates 34 made of crystal are arranged vertically with space in the lateral direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
