A first projection type display device is provided with a color separation element (41A) having a first and second incident surface (S1a, S1b) and transmitting or reflecting light of first through third wavelength bands, first through third reflective type light modulating elements (15), a first polarization separation element (12G), a second polarization separation element (12RB), and a projection optical system (19). The device is configured such that light of at least one wavelength band of the first through third wavelength bands is incident as first polarized light to the first incident surface of the color separation element, and light of another wavelength band is incident to the second incident surface of the color separation element as second polarized light orthogonal to the first polarized light.
