An optical transmission filter of band-pass type, comprising a plurality of nanopillars supported by a support medium, wherein the nanopillars are arranged in a two-dimensional non-periodic pattern at a minimum centre to centre distance P between neighbouring nanopillars within a range of 100–1000 nm and wherein the nanopillars have an average equivalent diameter D within a range of 50–350 nm. A relation between said minimum distance P between neighbouring nanopillars and said average equivalent diameter D of the nanopillars is such that a transmission spectrum of the optical transmission filter is dominated by effects arising from optical coupling between the nanopillars.
