<p>The shield (10) consists of a needle tip guard (24) which can be slid along the needle (12) from its proximal end to a position where it covers the needle tip (14). The guard is connected to an anchor (26) at the proximal end of the needle by an elongated spring tether (28), made from a resilient deflectable material such as resilient metallic wire which forms a loop with its axis orthogonal to that of the needle when the guard is in its proximal position. In variants the tether can be made from a plastic material and in one piece with the guard, or it can be made of fibreglass. The anchor can be made in one piece with the needle hub, and the guard incorporates an inner spring lock which tilts it relative to the needle tip when in the distal position, preventing it from sliding off the tip.</p> |
