PROCESS FOR BUILDING UP AN EDGE OF A MACHINE COMPONENT, AND MACHINE COMPONENT REMANUFACTURING STRATEGY

A process for building up a leading edge (18) of a machine component (10) such as a leading edge (18) of a turbine blade (12) for a turbocharger (40) includes forming a molten pool (30) along the edge (18) of the machine component (10), feeding a filler material (220) in a solid state into the molten pool (30) and melting the filler material (220) via heat transfer between the molten pool (30) and the filler material (220). A solid layer (28) may be formed along the leading edge (18) by cooling the molten pool (30). The process is applicable to remanufacturing damaged machine components (10) having a plurality of blades (12) with relatively thin leading edges (18).
