Charging or discharging piezoelectric element, e.g for fuel injector of IC engine

The procedure for charging or discharging a piezoelectric element (1) has the charging or discharging taking place in several stages. The charging or discharging takes place partly through an element (21) acting as a resistance to the current and partly through an element acting as an inductance for the current. As an element acting as a resistance, an element is used whose resistance can be altered before or during the charging/discharging process. This element is a current-limiting unit or part of the same, to be precise, a transistor. As the element acting as an inductance, a coil is used. The charging has a first stage using the resistive element and a second stage using the inductive element. The discharging uses the inductive element first, then the resistive one.
