A procedure for igniting lean air/fuel mixtures thinned with air or exhaust gas has enrichment of the mixture with fuel in the region of the spark plug electrodes. In a process stage introduced to the spark ignition, additional fuel is transported and sprayed on the surface of a small trough in the piston and its surrounding on the piston base and/or in the form of enriched fuel. After at least partial evaporation of the fuel still deposited on the walls and further mixing with the existing enriched mixture, after immersion of a spark ignition device with electrode into the piston trough, the additional fuel is ignited.
