The method involves longitudinally magnetizing cords with constant unidirectional magnetic field. A conveyor belt (1) is moved relative to a set of magnetic sensors (5) which are spaced apart and extended relative to the belt. The sensors are interrogated at spaced apart intervals of time. The sensors are utilized to detect the presence of north and south polarity fringing magnetic fields and no fringing magnetic field, and an output of the sensors is recorded.
