Subtilisin protease (I) that has, at positions homologous to positions 230, 256 and 259 of subtilisin BPN' from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, the amino acids (aa) Val, Gly and Asn, respectively, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) subtilisin proteases (II) that have: (i) at homologous position 230 any aa other than Ala, Ile, Leu, Met, Ser or Val; (ii) at 256 any aa other than Ala, Arg, Asn, Asp, Glu, Lys, Pro, Ser, Thr or Tyr; and/or (iii) at homologous position 259 any aa other than Ala, Arg, Asn, Asp, Cys, Ile, Leu, Lys, Pro, Ser or Thr, or (iv) at any of these positions no aa or a sequence of up to 20 aa; (b) subtilisin protein (III) that corresponds in at least 262 positions with the sequence of (I) (a 269 aa sequence (S2), fully defined in the specification) and includes at least one, preferably all, of Val-224, Gly-250 and Asn-253; (c) proteolytic enzyme (IV) that corresponds to (S2) in at least one, preferably all, of the antigen determinants that comprise positions 224, 250 and 253; (d) proteolytically active deletion, insertion or substitution variants, and fragments, of (I)-(IV); (e) nucleic acid (NA) encoding (I)-(IV) or the materials of (d); (f) vector containing NA; (g) cells containing the vector of (f); (h) preparation of (I)-(IV) or the materials of (d) by culturing (recombinant) host cells; (i) washing and cleaning compositions, and compositions for treating textiles or textile raw materials that contain (I)-(IV) or the materials of (d); (k) method using the compositions of (j); and (j) cosmetic compositions containing (I)-(IV) or the materials of (d).
