A battery unit (100) contains multiple cells of the type contained in a pouch of a generally rectangular shape with a welded side seam, such as lithium polymer cells. The battery unit (110) has a modular construction formed from a stack of interlocking frame pieces (15, 20, 25) where the number of open frame pieces (20) can be varied depending on the desired number of cells. Each cell pouch is gripped by its side seams between two of the frame pieces. The battery unit (100) also has a top cover piece (30) which together with the frame pieces (15, 20 10) and (25) encloses the cells. The top cover piece (30) also accommodates a battery management system (BMS) (32). This design protects the somewhat delicate cells while at the same time providing a lightweight modular construction. |
