A receiver (5) in a first zone (2) receives signals from a transmitter (4) with an object (1), and transmits the signals to a monitoring station (19) that registers the object's location. The object's location in a second zone (3) is determined based on a GPS signal obtained by a GPS receiver from the object via a GPS satellite and sent by a GPS transmitter to the monitoring station. A signal generated when the object leaves the first zone and enters the second zone and vice versa respectively activates and deactivates the GPS receiver and GPS transmitter.
