A method of controlling power consumption of electrical devices at a plurality of customer sites 10,12 in a supply web 22, each customer site having separate electricity meters 14. The method comprises acquiring a budget for electricity use in a predetermined time period, monitoring the real-time use of energy by devices in the supply web 22, comparing this usage with the budget and sending a control signal to devices based on the comparison to increase or decrease electrical load to balance total energy use with the budget. The budget is based on a monitored parameter in the physical network 8 related to the supply of and demand for electrical energy and the calculation of both an anticipated amount of required energy in the predetermined time period and a permitted flexibility in this anticipated amount. At least one real-time parameter related to the amount of excess energy in the network 8 may be monitored to determine whether this parameter exhibits characteristics indicative of over use or under use of electrical energy and a resulting control signal sent to at least one device in the web 22 to respectively reduce or increase electrical load on the network 8. |
