PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily detect a size, a shape and a position of a sheet by setting a platen including a two-dimensional lattice arrangement of proximity sensors, generating a digital signal expressing x-y coordinates on the lattice, and analyzing the digital signal generated from the sensor under the sheet. SOLUTION: A cut paper 1105 loaded on an input tray 1107 is sent to a vacuum retainer 1201, sucked and held in the device 1201 onto a surface 1211 of a platen 1203 which moves the cut paper 1105 to a printing area, and sent in a sub scanning direction. Synchronously with this send operation, a carriage 1109 set to a slider 1111 scans in an X-axis direction, thereby executing printing. The vacuum retainer 1201 has vacuum ports 1213... formed in the surface 1211. A valve state sensor detects that a gate valve mechanism attached to each individual port 1213 is driven by the arrival of the cut paper 1105. A size, a shape and a position of the cut paper 1105 are measured by a plurality of sensor signals.
