摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bidirectional optical amplifier with an extended applied region by alleviating an optical surge limitation of an SOA (Semiconductor Optical Amplifier) to downlink signal light in a PON (Passive Optical Network) system, and to provide the PON system, and a communication method of the PON system. <P>SOLUTION: A bidirectional optical amplifier has: a first SOA 63 that is inserted into an uplink signal light transmission path 65, and that amplifies an intensity of an uplink signal light; a second SOA 64 that is inserted into an downlink signal light transmission path 66, and that amplifies an intensity of a downlink signal light; a light regulator 11 that adjusts the light intensity of the downlink signal light to be equal to or less than an upper limit value of an unsaturated region of the second SOA 64; and a control circuit 13 that determines whether or not the light intensity of the downlink signal light, which is inputted to the second SOA 64, is more than the upper limit value of the unsaturated region of the second SOA 64. When determined that the light intensity of the downlink signal light is more than the upper limit value, the control circuit 13 makes the light regulator 11 carry out the adjustment. On the other hand, when determined that the light intensity of the downlink signal light is equal to or less than the upper limit value, the control circuit 13 stops the adjustment of the light regulator 11. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
