The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine (1, 20), in which method fuel is supplied to the internal combustion engine by means of a fuel pump (7, 9) and by means of a high-pressure fuel pump, and in which method the speed of the fuel pump and/or the electrical current for feeding the fuel pump (pump current) is controlled in accordance with a requirement variable, taking into account a determination specification, in particular a family of characteristics. In particular, in the event of a change of operating mode into an overrun mode, a calibration is carried out and the speed of the fuel pump (7, 9) is detected and is maintained at a substantially unchanged level. Once the triggering pressure for a calibration valve (8), arranged on the pressure side of the fuel pump, has been reached, the pump current is detected, a bypass volumetric flow rate of the high-pressure fuel pump is determined during calibration using operating parameters and the triggering pressure for the calibration valve (8), the determined speed, the bypass volumetric flow rate and the determined pump current are used to calibrate the determination specification. As a result of the interim determination of the bypass volumetric flow rate of the high-pressure fuel pump, an offset of the determined triggering pressure for a calibration valve (8) can be determined in the low-pressure circuit between the fuel pump and the high-pressure fuel pump such that the family of characteristics of the fuel pump can be subsequently calibrated with sufficient accuracy, even for a diesel system, taking into account a corrected triggering pressure. |
