The gear change mechanism has a command lever allowing selection of automatic or manual drive. There is a luminous source which illuminates two photo electric diode receivers (36). The gear lever slides a plate mechanism (28) which can block or allow the luminous source light to one or both photodiodes, or allow one photo receiver only to receive light. Movement of the lever allows automatic drive to be selected and direct gear change to manual mode.
