A signal generating apparatus for generating an output signal in accordance with a given pattern data. The signal generating apparatus comprises a plurality of timing generators that generate, based on a given reference clock, periodic signals having their respective different phases relative to the reference clock; a shift register part which has a plurality of cascaded flip-flops and in which the pattern data are sequentially propagated through the plurality of flip-flops in accordance with the first periodic signal outputted by the first timing generator; a plurality of cascaded registers that are associated with the respective timing generators except the first timing generator and that each sequentially propagate the data, which is outputted by a preselected one of the flip-flops, in accordance with the periodic signal outputted by the corresponding timing generator; and a waveform generating part that generates, based on the data values outputted by the plurality of flip-flops and by the plurality of registers, the waveform of an output signal.
