An axial flux electric motor (10) includes a rotor (12) rotatable about an axis of rotation A-A, a stator (14) that includes a stator member (30) that is spaced from the rotor (12) along the axis of rotation A-A to define a gap between the stator member (30) and the rotor (12), the stator member (30) defines two opposed side surfaces and an outer peripheral surface. The rotor (12) includes permanent magnets (16) and the stator (14) includes electromagnetic magnets (18) secured to the outer peripheral surface of the stator member (30), such that in use, the magnetic flux across the gap is essentially oriented along the axis of rotation A-A. The invention also relates to an axial flux electric motor (10) having electromagnetic magnets (18) that comprise a core (44) defining a central body portion and at least one arm extending transversely from each end of the central body portion towards a common rotor (12), wherein the windings (42) are located over the central body portion, such that a single winding may be used to generate flux of opposite polarity in two pole faces (46) that face, and direct flux to a common rotor (12).
