<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately aligning the image positions on both sides of a paper even for a high-speed machine. <P>SOLUTION: When forming an image on the front surface of the paper in double-sided printing, reference lines for correction 121 and 122 are formed on the front surface 20a of the paper. The reference lines 121 and 122 are detected by an image position detection means 101, and the detected information is fed back to correct the position of the image on the back surface of the paper, when forming the image on the back surface. During the detection by the image position detection means 101, paper convey speed is changed, to speed for detecting time lower than the normal paper conveying speed, whereby the detection accuracy is improved.
