PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide fine needle zinc oxide having a high specific surface area and aspect ratio. SOLUTION: The fine needle zinc oxide is characterized in that the average major diameter is≤500 nm, the average minor diameter is≤100 nm, the aspect ratio defined by (average major diameter)/(average minor diameter) is≥4, and the specific surface area measured by BET method is≥20 m<SP>2</SP>/g.
