<p>The method of the invention comprises controlling the mechanical torque taken by the alternator from an alternator excitation control. According to the invention, said control is carried out on the excitation using a control loop including the comparison between a set-point excitation current (I<SUB>EXC</SUB>- <SUB>CONS</SUB>) and a measured excitation current(I<SUB>EXC_MES</SUB>), the set-point excitation current (I<SUB>EXC</SUB>- <SUB>CONS</SUB>) being obt9ained by estimation of a set-point alternator torque value (C<SUB>CONS</SUB>).</p>
