An array substrate for an IPS(In-Plane Switching) mode LCD and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to prevent the reduction of brightness, by contacting common electrodes and pixel electrodes directly with a substrate. A gate line is formed on a substrate(110). A common line is formed in parallel with the gate line. A data line(130) crosses the gate line to define a pixel region. A thin film transistor is formed at a crossing region of the gate line and the data line. A passivation layer(140) is formed above the gate line, the data line, the common line, and the thin film transistor. A plurality of common electrodes(160) are connected to the common line and contacted with the substrate. A plurality of pixel electrodes(155) are connected to the thin film transistor and contacted with the substrate. The pixel electrodes and the common electrodes are alternately disposed.
