An optical fiber (1) wound on an optical-fiber bobbin (5) is put in a flexible packaging material (2). The packaging material is closed and is sealed after heavy hydrogen is introduced thereinto. This method is characterized in that the optical fiber (1) is treated, during storage or transport, with heavy hydrogen in a mixed-gas atmosphere comprising heavy hydrogen and air. The concentration of heavy hydrogen in the atmosphere in the packaging material (2) immediately after the introduction of heavy hydrogen is regulated to from 0.5 ppm to 4%. After the optical fiber (1) has been put in, the opening (3) of the packaging material (2) may be closed with heat or an adhesive. Alternatively, the opening (3) may be closed with a zipper. After the opening (3) is partly closed, heavy hydrogen may be introduced through the remaining part of the opening (3). Alternatively, an opening (4) having a check valve (6) of a self-sealing type may be disposed in the packaging material (2) to introduce heavy hydrogen through this opening (4).
