An apparatus and a method for controlling restart operation of an engine are provided to lower load applied by a variable valve unit in restart of the engine by igniting fuel in a fuel chamber of the engine in non-operation of the engine. An apparatus for controlling restart operation of an engine(101) comprises an ignition member such as a fuel injection valve(131) and an ignition plug(122) and a load control member. The engine is provided with a variable valve unit including valve lift devices(112a,112b) and valve timing devices(113a,113b). The ignition member starts the engine by igniting fuel contained in a fuel chamber(106) of the engine in non-operation state of the engine. The load control member forcibly lowers load consumed by the variable valve unit when the ignition member starts the engine. The load control member allows the variable valve unit to keep the lowered load for one stroke of the engine.
