In a liquid crystal display including a liquid crystal display panel formed by sandwiching a liquid crystal layer between an active matrix substrate and a counter substrate, and a backlight system that illuminates the liquid crystal display panel from the active matrix substrate side, an optical sensor for detecting the intensity of ambient light is provided in a peripheral region of a display region in a substrate surface of the active matrix substrate on the liquid crystal layer side. The optical sensor is located near the outer edge of the display region that is perpendicular to the direction (X direction) in which the directivity of emitted light of the backlight system is highest.
