The invention provides an anhydrous oral care composition comprising a particulate calcium carbonate composed of primary particles which are acicular and which have a length of 2 microns or greater, the composition being adapted to be applied to the surface of the teeth in a mixture with water; for the treatment of hypersensitivity arising in natural human teeth. The mixture of the anhydrous oral care composition with water is effective as a dentinal tubule occluding agents. Furthermore the acicular calcium carbonate (as defined above) can provide a smooth and pleasant mouth-feel when formulated into products such as dentifrices.
