The invention provides a method and a system (10; 110; 210; 310) for monitoring a pedestrian crossing (1). The system comprises: a vehicle sensor device (12; 112) configured to sense a vehicle (3) in a vicinity of the pedestrian crossing (1); a determination device (14; 114; 218) configured to determine at least one movement property of the sensed vehicle (3); a notification device (16; 116), with which information is providable to the pedestrian crossing (1); and a controller (18; 118; 218; 318), with which the notification device (16; 116) is controllable to provide the information based on the at least one movement property determined for the sensed vehicle (3).
