Apparatus (10) and method for the maintenance of a vertical artifact (11) arranged to support a transit seat of a viaduct (12). The apparatus (10) comprises a scaffolding (13) of selectively adjustable sizes, arranged at least partly around the vertical artifact (11), and moved vertically by means of one or more motor members (14). The scaffolding (13) is associated with guide members (15, 115) which stabilize it with respect to the vertical artifact (11) and to guide the vertical movement thereof.
