Control of gain and bias current of a transmitter to improve linearity and efficiency

A transmitter 10 with first and second controllable characteristics (e.g. gain and bias current) is calibrated by a method which includes storing data to control the controllable characteristics according to the required output power, which may be set by received data specifying a power level. The method minimises the power supply current drawn by the transmitter and takes advantage of a near continuous bias adjustment capability to operation in terms of linearity, adjacent channel leakage ratio (ALCR) and efficiency over the whole dynamic range of the transmitter.
