PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of suppressing toner from sticking to the backside of a transfer material from a transfer member and also easily removing the toner stuck to the transfer member with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 has: a changing means 55 which changes the state of the relative position between an image carrier 35 and the transfer member 51 in a transfer section T2, between a first state where a gap is provided between the image carrier 35 and the transfer member 51 and a second state where the image carrier 35 and the transfer member 51 come into contact with each other; a first mode which is a mode for transferring a toner image on the image carrier 35 onto the transfer material P and in which the state of the relative position is set to the first state; and a second mode which is a mode for adhering the toner on the transfer member 51 onto the image carrier 35 and in which the state of the relative position is set to the second state.
