Relay architectures for mobile wireless networks

A communication device configured to route communications between one or more out-of-coverage communication devices using one or more proximity services (ProSe). For example, the communication device can be configured as a mobile device-to network relay. The communication device can be configured to route communications associated with one more out-of-coverage communication devices that are serviced by the communication device. The communication device can be configured to utilize Layer 3 routing.

1. A communication device, comprising:
a transceiver configured to communicate with a base station and a mobile device; and processor circuitry communicatively coupled to the transceiver, the processor circuitry configured to:
receive a ProSe request from the mobile device to attach to the communication device for one or more proximity services:generate a ProSe relay bearer to carry communications between the base station and the mobile device, wherein the ProSe relay bearer is distinct from an evolved packet system (EPS) bearer used to carry communications between the communication device and the base station;determine temporary identification information associated with the mobile device;generate a communication tunnel using the temporary identification information;request identification information via the communication tunnel based on the temporary identification information; andreceive a communication from the mobile device using the transceiver and route the communication via the ProSe relay bearer to the base station based on the identification information.
